Continuum Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy or Aquatherapy is a private one on one session in a local, indoor, heated pool. It involves movements and exercise in the water to strengthen and stretch the body using the wonderful properties of the water (Buoyancy, Resistance, Hydrostatic pressure, Analgesia). Special attention is paid to specific injuries or post surgery rehab needs. Each client is met at the level they can handle. Sessions can range from very active and challenging, to light and more manageable. Come and try a session out, there is no commitment, but I know you will love it and benefit from it.
Joy has completed her 4 year Honours Degree in Kinesiology at Western University in London, Ontario. She has more than 15 years experience in Rehab with a special focus being in Hydrotherapy. She started and operated her own Hydrotherapy company in South Africa for almost 6 years and is now excited to be doing the same here in Vernon.

Free Income Tax Return preparation for low-income Seniors. Tax Clinic appointments available from early March to late April. Tax preparation also available year-round for those who forget or need to get caught up. To qualify, your maximum income must be less than $35,000 for a Single or $45,000 for a Couple.
This is a drop-off and pick-up service by appointment only during the Clinic period. You will need your T4 slips and if possible, your previous year’s tax return or Notice of Assessment.
This free Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is provided courtesy of the CRA and is performed by CRA-trained volunteers through NexusBC.

BC Association of Community Response Networks
A Community Response Network (CRN) is made up of a diverse group of concerned community members, community agencies, local businesses, government agencies, professionals, and others who come together to create a coordinated community response to abuse, neglect, and self-neglect in vulnerable adults. When the community cannot provide appropriate support to the adult, the Adult Guardianship Act provides designated agencies (Health Authorities and Community Living BC) with the responsibility of investigating and ensuring that the proper action is undertaken.
CRNs around the province are reaching out to their communities to join the network and work to raise the awareness of abuse, neglect, and self-neglect in vulnerable adults, and to ultimately prevent it from happening.

Community gardening is a valuable recreation activity that can contribute to food security, community development, environmental awareness, positive social interaction and community education.
NexusBC Community Resource Centre has recently taken over the management of two community gardens in Vernon containing plots available to members of the community to rent for seasonal use. Current locations include:

Seniors Abuse and Information Line (SAIL)
Weekdays 8am to 8pm and weekends 10am to 5:30pm, excluding statutory holidays.
Language interpretation is available Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm.
Our province wide confidential Seniors Abuse and Information Line (SAIL) is a safe place for older adults, and those who care about them to talk to a trained intake worker about abuse or mistreatment, receive information and support about issues that impact the health and well being of an older adult. SAIL intake workers are trained to provide a listening, non-judgmental and supportive ear and provide resources, referrals to our free internal programs and support. Callers who are age 50+ and are victims of abuse or family and sexual violence, and who need practical and emotional support may be referred to our Victim Services Program for information, support and referrals to services in the community.
When calling SAIL, press 1 to speak with an Intake Worker, or press 2 if you would like to leave a voicemail message for a callback. When leaving a message, please state whether it is safe for our staff to leave a message. We will not leave a message if not specified.

Lawyer Referral Service (Access Pro Bono)
The Lawyer Referral Service is funded by the Law Foundation of British Columbia and operated by the Canadian Bar Association. Please call 1-800-663-1919 during business hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Once the area of law is determined, the operator will provide you with the name and telephone number of a local lawyer. You contact the lawyer to set up an appointment to meet. Interior Health Lifeline Program
Interior Health Lifeline is a non-profit program assisting individuals maintain their independence and remain safe. The program provides an emergency response and personal medication dispensers to residents living in the Shuswap and North, Central, and South Okanagan areas. The HomeSafe buttons provides an emergency response at home. The regular-style button must be pressed, while an auto-alert style button can detect most falls from a standing position. The GoSafe auto-alert button provides an emergency response anywhere in Canada. Worn as a neck or wrist style help button, you or your loved one will be able to summon help in an emergency, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Personal Medication Dispenser can hold up to 60 doses of medication. The dispenser supports individuals take the right medication at the right time with audio and visual cues. The service automatically alerts a caregiver within 90 minutes of a missed dose.

Good Food Box Program
The Good Food Box Society of the North Okanagan has been active in our community since 2000. This is a healthy food initiative, serving Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby, Falkland, Lumby, Cherryville and the Westside.

Senior’s Home Renovation Tax Credit
The BC Seniors’ Home Renovation Tax Credit is a refundable personal income tax credit to assist individuals aged 65 and over with the cost of certain permanent home renovations, effective for the 2012 and subsequent tax years.
You can claim the credit when you file your T1 income tax return. Complete the British Columbia Home Renovation Tax Credit for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities form (Schedule BC(S12)) and enter the amount you spent on eligible renovations beside box 60480 on the British Columbia Credits form (BC479).
You must retain documentation to support your claim, including receipts from suppliers and contractors. If work has been performed by a family member, receipts for labour and materials must have a GST/HST number.
If you receive an invoice at the end of the calendar year and pay it in the following calendar year, the credit is to be claimed for the taxation year based on when you received the invoice.

Choice in Supports for Independent Living (CSIL)
Choice in Supports for Independent Living (CSIL) is a self-directed option for eligible home support clients. CSIL clients receive funds directly from their local health authority to purchase their own home support services. CSIL clients become employers who manage all aspects of their home support from hiring and supervising staff to overseeing how CSIL funds are spent.
CSIL may be suitable if you have a significant physical disability and desire more control and flexibility in managing your home support services. To be eligible for services, you must also be unable to function independently because of chronic, health-related problems or have health care conditions that require care due to one or more of the following: You have recently been discharged from an acute care hospital; you require care to prevent or reduce the need for hospital or emergency department services or admission to a residential care facility, or you have a life-limiting illness.

The Provincial Seniors’ Phone Line has been established to allow seniors and their families, or other concerned individuals in their lives, to report concerns about care. This toll-free phone line is intended to supplement existing care concern avenues with dedicated support for seniors with complex needs.

- Improved navigation with care concerns to appropriate health system channels.
- Improved access to support for unresolved care concerns.

The Compassionate Friends
The Compassionate Friends (TCF) group provides support following the death of children, regardless of cause or age. The group leads discussion-based meetings, sometimes picking a topic or watching a movie, but usually just allowing a discussion to run its own course. The group has no religious affiliation and neither discourages or encourages members to speak about their faith. It does not collect membership dues or fees.
TCF meetings are held on the last Thursday of the month at 6pm at the People Place in Vernon (3400 27 Avenue).

Good Morning Program by CMHA
The Good Morning Program (GMP) is a free telephone service for seniors or people with high health risks, who live alone or feel isolated in the community. The program enables these individuals to remain living independently longer by providing a daily phone call to ensure participants are safe. Phone calls are made seven days a week 365 days a year by trained volunteers. Participants can be referred by care providers, family, friends or self-referrals can be made.
Each call is a non-intrusive, non-judgmental safety check that provides some social interaction.

Bounce Back: Reclaim Your Health
Bounce Back is a free program providing resources and services to individuals experiencing symptoms of mild to moderate depression, low mood or stress, with or without anxiety. The program offers telephone coaching in a series of self-help modules along with a DVD called BounceBack* Today. The coaching program can be accessed by referral from family physicians’ offices everywhere in British Columbia. Individuals who prefer to work on their own can use the online program to learn at their own pace. A referral is not required to access the online program.
