In an effort to become part of the solution to the growing struggles of seniors facing food security, we offer the following supports. If you are a senior facing low food security, please phone us at 250.545.0585 or email [email protected] to find out how we may be able to help you.
Please note that the following supports are meant to be supplemental and may not always be available due to funding.
The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program is a healthy eating initiative that supports farmers’ markets and strengthens food security across British Columbia. With help from BC Farmers Markets and community partners, we can provide a limited number of low-income seniors with coupons for fresh, locally produced food at our local Farmer’s Market. This program typically runs from June to October.
Community gardening is a valuable recreation activity that can contribute to food security, community development, environmental awareness, positive social interaction and community education. Plots are rented on an annual basis. Learn more here: Vernon Community Gardens
We are happy to be working with Buy Low Foods (Vernon) on a project to provide discounted groceries to low-income seniors. Please contact us to learn more.
The Good Food Box Society of the North Okanagan is a volunteer-run, produce-buying cooperative that increases access to affordable local vegetables and fruit through community partnerships. When funding permits, we are able to connect seniors with a good food box.
